    • The scope of this project included construction of a new 20,000 square foot, two-story masonry over structural steel Cultural Museum constructed in a wilderness area on a Bureau of Land Management (BLM). One unusual aspect of construction was the installation of stainless steel cabling on the exterior of the structure to resemble an ancient sailing vessel ship’s ladder. The project required extensive site work including massive cuts and over-excavation near the entrance to a canyon. Construction required placement and finishing of an extensive cast-in-place concrete slab and placement of a colored concrete wall below an overlook area. Other elements of work included: installation of a 25,000 gallon above-ground water storage tank; development of a 400 foot deep water well and construction of a chemically treated water booster station for domestic water and fire suppression; and, an improved access road to the site constructed by BLM personnel. Other work included: installation of 22’ high aluminum framed curtain walls; aluminum storefront entrances and windows; hollow metal frames and doors and wood doors and hardware; standard acoustical suspended ceilings and an unusual curved panel ceiling in the main corridor; unique wood flooring constructed of six inch diameter vertically-installed wooden sections; light-gauge steel stud framing, gypsum wallboard and paint; ceramic tile walls and flooring; carpet and vinyl flooring and cove base; and elevator. Other construction included construction of a concrete and masonry amphitheater and a unique delivery and set-up of a 2,400 square foot factory constructed caretaker residence. The caretaker residence was delivered as a single unit in lieu of a typical split unit similar to a double wide structure. Other elements of the project included construction of a separate two-car garage for the caretaker and independent propane and septic systems for the museum and residence. White Sands self-performed approximately 20% of the work.
