NMHU - Lora Shields Science Center Renovation
The scope of the remodel includes the basement, first, second, and third levels, and focuses on converting former science laboratories into academic classrooms, faculty offices, and new science labs. The remodel was designed to attain LEED Silver certification. A variety of green practices were implemented, including water catchment systems, photovoltaic energy systems, efficient glazing, recycled and regional materials & finishes, solar shading devices, water efficient plumbing fixture replacement, heating and cooling upgrades, and low water use landscape vegetation. The architect arranged the interior spaces to capture daylight, even though the space did not have an exterior wall. Consequently, faculty offices and workspaces are awash in natural light. With the enthusiastic support of faculty, epoxy countertops and science tables were reused throughout the facility. When the doors opened this summer, he saw the students and faculty enthusiastically put the new classrooms and labs to use. The building now has 24 faculty and graduate level offices, 10 laboratory spaces (including specialized labs for anthropology, physical science, geology, and paleomagnetism), multiple classrooms and a lecture room. The Lora Shields Building was also chosen as a 2011 Outstanding Design by the American School & University magazine, and was profiled in the 2011 issue of the American School & University Architectural Portfolio.

The remodel was designed to become LEED Silver certified, and official USGBC certification is currently pending. A variety of design principals were utilized, including a water catchment plan, photovoltaic energy systems, recycled and regional materials and finishes, the reuse of existing structural and non-structural elements, heating and cooling upgrades, water efficient plumbing fixtures, and new landscaping using native plants. The Natatorium was also chosen as a 2011 Outstanding Design by the American School & University magazine, and was profiled in the 2011 issue of the American School & University Architectural Portfolio.

NMSU-A - Health & Science Building - Reidlinger Building
White Sands Construction, Inc. served as the prime contractor for this project that involved construction of a 16,716 s.f. three-story addition to an existing facility. The new facility houses the Health Sciences Center and is connected to the rest of the campus with a multi-level, handicapped-accessible connector. The center provides nursing, medical and technician laboratories, classrooms, student support spaces including an atrium auditorium, lecture hall, library, media center, restrooms, study areas and offices. The building was constructed on a concrete reinforced foundation using a structural steel framing system with a steel joist roof structure. The roof itself is a single-ply system. Exterior walls are stucco in several colors that complement each other and the design and style of the remaining campus. Building systems included: fire protection and suppression; intrusion detection and control system; an air handling system with split system HVAC, voice and data communications, electricity and lightning protections. An elevator was also included in the project. In 2006, the New Mexico State University (NMSU) system made a commitment to create sustainable buildings and communities that foster sustainable, environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves quality of life. As part of this commitment, NMSU elected to utilize the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. The Reidlinger addition was the first at any NMSU campus to be subject to this requirement and received a “Silver” rating. The LEED certification considered six categories in certifying the building as “Silver” including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Material and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in Design. Credits were received in all categories. The project was designed to meet LEED Silver standards but once construction was completed it was awarded LEED Gold.
